Hmm.  I wonder if the --debug flag would turn up anything interesting
during that mystery interval?  I'm a bit suspicious of some sort of
caching--I'm guessing that the more items processed during a given run,
the longer the lag at the end is.  If that's the case, it may be that
the data is all getting committed at the end, rather than at the time
each item is processed.  It may turn out to be a cache setting that can
be tweaked in your my.cnf file.
