Aldous,
Since a 4xx error is a transient error, a real mail server will attempt to
re-deliver the message for the configured amount of time and/or number of
times before an NDR is created. The sending mail server (not the
receiving mail server) is responsible for the creation of the NDR, so
depending on how your mail server is configured will dictate if/when you
get the NDR.
Also, I would add this to your /etc/postfix/main.cf so that you don't get
bogged down with all the re-delivers:
unverified_recipient_reject_code = 550
Otherwise, you will just have a worse spam problem with all the spam
constantly being re-delivered to your server.
