one simple approach would be to use pam... we do it here so we can use a 
custom auth method.  We've got our pam stack set up and an imap server ( 
which doesn't actually get mail or anything, it's just a mechanism to 
auth against).  Then you get pam set up for the imap server to auth 
against and you use maia's builtin imap auth support; it's easier then 
hacking auth.php.
