Hi guys,

I joined the conversation late... but all indications seem to point to the 
client libraries on the server/problem machine.  Have you tried reinstalling 
all of the mysql/mysql-client/dbd-mysql packages from scratch and ensuring 
they're the same version as the server?

More of a long-shot, but you may also want to check my.cnf and make sure 
there is no timeout set (on the client settings) and also that you are 
allowing persistent connections.
