After several months and what felt like a man-year of labour, I'm pleased
to announce that Release Candidate 1 (RC1) is now available for the
much-anticipated Maia Mailguard 1.0.0. You can download this new version
from the usual place, on the Maia website (http://www.renaissoft.com/maia).

I'll apologize, first of all, for the delays in getting to this point. I
had hoped to get to this point much sooner, but my available time was not
as great as I had expected :) Even my latest deadline of January 1st was
slipped by a day, as I sprained my wrist during a New Years Eve dogsledding
accident (don't ask, the dogs are all fine ;)

In any case, RC1 is now available, and I'm counting on the early adopters
among you to test it when you get a chance. I can attest that RC1 seems to
be working quite well for me on my network, but I'm anxious to hear from
those of you who have LDAP and SQL authentication mechanisms, since that
code is essentially untested at this point. Your feedback in general (on
the maia-users mailing list, preferably) is welcome and encouraged--the
sooner all the bugs get exposed, the sooner 1.0.0 can go into an "official"
release. In the meantime, I don't recommend that you use RC1 for
production purposes--I can't vouch for its stability on systems other than
my own.

The list of new features in Maia 1.0.0 is extensive, and you can find an
itemized list on the Maia Mailguard website. A small change has also been
made to the license for Maia Mailguard, as you'll see there as
well. Essentially, there are now two types of licenses available for Maia
Mailguard--the general license and a new "rebranding" license for those of
you who wish to strip away the Maia Mailguard logos and links in order to
incorporate it into your own products. The general license requires that a
certain amount of the Maia Mailguard "branding" remain intact--either the
logo in the banner, or a "Powered by Maia Mailguard" button somewhere on
your gateway pages. If you want to strip those out and embed Maia
Mailguard into your own product without the link-backs or accreditation,
contact me about purchasing a rebranding license for a modest fee.

On that note, I should point out that there is a PayPal donation button at
the bottom of the Maia Mailguard website, which you can use if you feel
like supporting my efforts. I'm certainly not doing this to "get rich",
but seeing some return on the investment of my time would make my wife feel
a lot better about it :)

In any case, enjoy Maia RC1--I think you'll like her, once you get to know her.

Happy New Year!
